Das bisher nirgends geschlossen behandelte Thema erschließt eine neue, sehr betrachtenswerte Welt, die ernst und heiter, streng und verspielt, fromm und frivol in einem ist, bezaubernd aber in jedem Falle.Die Einführung Prof. Dr. Karl Bosls "Die Bibliothek in der Gesellschaft und Kultur Europas vom 6. bis 18. Jahrhundert" klärt aus souveränem Wissen die Voraussetzungen des Entstehens und der Einrichtung von Bibliotheksräumen, die Leistungen der Fürsten, Klöster und Universitäten und die gesellschaftlichen Funktionen der Bibliotheken.Das erste Kapitel umreißt die Entwicklung der Bibliotheksbauten von ersten beschreibenden Urkunden der Antike bis zum Ende der Pultbibliotheken und versucht, anhand noch erhaltener Bauten die europäischen Erscheinung der mittelalterlichen Bibliotheken zu zeichnen.
Kiedy mowa o bibliotekach, chodzi niemal wyłącznie o księgozbiory. Niniejszy tom zawiera informacje o przestrzeniach bibliotecznych i wciąż istniejących, historycznie ważnych bibliotekach Europy, sfotografowanych mistrzowsko przez Helgę Schmidt-Glassner. Temat, który nigdzie dotąd nie był kompleksowo poruszany, otwiera nowy, fascynujący świat - poważny i radosny, surowy i żartobliwy, pobożny i frywolny zarazem, a zarazem urzekający pod każdym względem. Wstęp prof. dr. Karla Bosla, zatytułowany „Biblioteka w społeczeństwie i kulturze Europy od VI do XVIII wieku”, z mistrzowską wiedzą wyjaśnia przesłanki powstania i wyposażenia przestrzeni bibliotecznych, wkład książąt, klasztorów i uniwersytetów oraz społeczne funkcje bibliotek. Pierwszy rozdział przedstawia zarys rozwoju budynków bibliotecznych od pierwszych dokumentów opisowych z czasów antycznych do końca ery bibliotek z pulpitami, a także podejmuje próbę zobrazowania europejskiego wyglądu bibliotek średniowiecznych na podstawie zachowanych budynków.
