Thomas Nyqvist (born in Porvoo in 1955, lives in Helsinki) started exhibiting while still a student at the Free Art School in Helsinki in the late 1970s and has been a distinct voice in Finnish painting since then. His vision and its presentation have evolved, but he has repeatedly dedicated himself to ‘the inner landscape’: depictions of the contemporary world in all its instability, especially the natural and built environments. Nyqvist’s painterly oeuvre reflects what society chooses to nurture or discard, including his own daily existence as a studio artist. In all of his work, which for many years also encompassed teaching at the University of Art and Design, he has consistently made the case for the painted image in today’s visual culture. He has upheld painting as an experiential practice, a system of knowledge and an inexhaustible source of intellectual and emotional stimulation. Nyqvist’s paintings, usually based on his own photographs of demolitions, diggings and other urban ‘non-sites’, become meditations on change and disruption – but also devices for fixating random outcomes of heightened attention and easing new transitions from flux to form. Painovoima translates as ‘gravity’ but literally means ‘weight-force’. As the title of Nyqvist’s second solo exhibition at Kohta, the Finnish word proposes that painting continues to ‘carry weight’ as an expertly shaped variety of collective consciousness. Painting also couldn’t function without its constant use of earth elements of a certain density and heaviness (minerals) as means of visual articulation and expression (pigments).
